Fence,” the new work by Atlanta-based dance company, Staibdance, portrays the complex issues of power, otherness and unrest.

The work was inspired by dramatic, life-changing events that artistic director George Staib experienced during his childhood in Iran. Traditional Iranian dance is demonstrated in the piece. Staib collaborated with musicians, composers, and scenic, lighting and digital designers, to demonstrate a more visceral experience of what it means to be and not be in power.

Staib spoke with “City Lights” about the upcoming world premiere and the events which inform the piece.

“Fence” will be performed at Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts Oct. 3-6.
