Georgia Power reports at one point last night more than 171,000 customers were without power. Of those, about 38,000 were in the greater Atlanta area.

The strong storm system started to enter North Georgia in the afternoon.

“We started to see strong storms develop and then a very strong system coming out of Tennessee, just behind that culminated together into a strong line of storms that came down from Northwest Georgia down through northern parts of the metro,” said Lara Pagano, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

Metro Atlanta was among the parts of the state hit Tuesday.

Some areas saw hail, and there are reports of downed trees and power lines throughout the northern half of the state.

Authorities say nearly 40,000 customers across Georgia remained without power early Wednesday morning.
