StoryCorps: Chuck Roberts

Most people who know Chuck Roberts know him as a Presbyterian pastor. But in 1978, he was a college kid spending his summers as a dump-truck driver for the Arkansas Highway Department.

At StoryCorps Atlanta, he told his daughter Anne about the moment at that job that confirmed his call to ministry.

Three years to the day after the accident, Chuck became a ministerial candidate. Today, he is a pastor at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. He never tried loading that much asphalt again—and says he doubts anyone else in the department did, either.
