After months of negotiations, Atlanta-based UPS and the Teamsters have tentatively agreed on a new master union contract.

UPS is the nation’s largest employer of Teamsters. Friday’s handshake agreement would cover more than 200,000 small package employees.

The contract includes bigger pension benefits and a $4.15 per hour wage hike for full-time employees over five years. Part-time workers would get an immediate starting pay bump from $10 to $13.

In a statement, Denis Taylor, co-chairman of the Teamsters UPS National Negotiating committee called the agreement “among the very best ever negotiated.”

For leverage, earlier this month union members had approved a strike if necessary.

There are a few regional agreements left to work out before a final vote. The whole thing must be approved by a majority of UPS Teamsters.

The current contract expires at the end of July.

The contract for the 11,000 Teamsters in UPS Freight is still being negotiated.
