Construction is now officially underway at what is intended to eventually be Atlanta’s biggest park. City officials gathered Thursday at the future Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry. At a couple hundred acres, it will be larger than Piedmont Park.

The initial round of work is on the north end of the park, off Johnson Road.

The idea for the place came up during early planning for the BeltLine. The trail won’t connect directly to the park, but will come close, and eventually the Proctor Creek Greenway will connect the BeltLine and the park, near the Bankhead MARTA station.

Meanwhile construction continues on the quarry itself, which will become a reservoir holding a 30-day emergency supply of drinking water for the city. That drilling is being done by a 400-foot-long tunnel boring machine, nicknamed Driller Mike.
