North Atlantic right whales were a popular species to hunt during the whaling era. By the late-1800s, they were approaching extinction.
The whales, which give birth off the coast of Georgia and other Southern states, have been protected for decades, but the species has never approached a full recovery. Experts estimate there are 384 of the whales living now, making them one of the most endangered whale species in the world.
