On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Comedy,” Atlanta’s funniest locals share insights on the perks and perils of their profession. This edition features Atlanta-based comedian Alyx Libby.

Libby got into comedy when an acquaintance brought her to a local open mic. She didn’t know about open mics or how comedy worked, but after going to a couple of open mics, she decided she had to try it, and then decided she had to get good at it.

Libby finds the competition in comedy to be a challenge, as well as women not being taken as seriously.

Sound advice Libby received about her comedic career has been, “When you start, you tend to do what you think other people will find funny, but what you want to do is what you find funny, and then you will find your audience.”
