Filmmaker Paul Phelan, shooting on location in the Namib desert of Southern Africa, observed that everywhere humans live near elephants, we seem universally to experience them as wise, even spiritual, always extraordinary.

Desert Elephants” is the new IMAX film Phelan and his team have created, following the journey of baby elephant Little Foot as she survives the many challenges of the desert with her herd. The film is screening now at Fernbank Museum of Natural History.

Phelan joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to discuss his experience documenting these amazing desert giants.

“Other than being preachy about conservation, which I think turns people off, I prefer to show the wonder of the animals as they are,” said Phelan.
