The drummer for the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart, said, “Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine.” In the Atlanta Symphony, Mark Yancich had an essential role in the orchestra’s beating heart.

He became principal timpanist of the ASO in 1981 and held the prestigious Walter Bunzl Chair until he retired in 2024. Yancich has led an active career as a chamber musician, soloist, educator and publisher. He can be heard on over 120 recordings with the Atlanta Symphony, including most of the great choral/orchestral repertoire with Robert Shaw conducting.

As part of a “City Lights” ongoing series, Yancich joined host Lois Reitzes to celebrate 50 Years of ASO broadcasts on WABE.
