Have you ever dreamed of being a Supreme Court justice for the state of Georgia? Thankfully for you, submissions are now in session.
Georgia’s Judicial Nominating Commission announced Tuesday that it is accepting nominations to fill an upcoming vacancy. Chief Justice Michael Boggs announced in February that he would step down at the end of the court’s current term on March 31.
“You are invited to submit nominations for this vacancy. Members of the Bar may submit their own name or the names of others,” according to a court press release. “The public is also invited to submit nominations.”
By state law, applicants for a spot on the Supreme Court of Georgia must be a member of the State Bar of Georgia and have practiced law for at least seven years.
Nominations must be received by March 24. The deadline to apply for the position is April 7. The application package is available to download on the Judicial Nomination Commission’s website.
Nominations and applications should be sent either by email to Vincent Russo, co-chair of the Commission, at [email protected] or by letter to the Judicial Nominating Commission, c/o Vincent Russo, 500 14th St. NW, Atlanta, Georgia, 30318.
The Commission will notify applicants who get selected for an interview. After interviews are concluded, the Commission will recommend a short list of candidates for the position to Gov. Brian Kemp.
Kemp will appoint Boggs’ replacement to the court, which would be the governor’s fifth addition to the court of nine. The state Supreme Court justices chose their peer Nels S.D. Peterson to be the next chief justice.
Justices serve six-year terms and run in non-partisan elections, though Kemp became heavily involved in last year’s re-election of Justice Andrew Pinson, who was challenged by former Democratic U.S. Rep. John Barrow.
Boggs’ resignation comes as the court could face a number of high-profile cases. He plans to return to private practice in South Georgia.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that The Supreme Court of Georgia announced an upcoming vacancy in the court. This was done by the state’s Judicial Nominating Commission.
