The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is encouraging metro Atlanta travelers to take the train the next time they need to catch a plane.

The push comes after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officials announced on Monday that they will increase parking rates for the first time since 2017. The new rates — some of which are double and triple the current amounts — go into effect May 1.

Hartsfield-Jackson officials say the changes are a response to the nation’s current economic climate, with the Consumer Price Index for metro Atlanta rising approximately 30% since the facility’s last parking increase.

Currently, daily parking rates are $19, with economy and international park ride rates listed at $14. The ATL West Deck rate is $16.

“MARTA is one of only a few public transit systems in the world that take customers directly into the Airport,” said MARTA CEO and General Manager Collie Greenwood in a press release Wednesday. “Meanwhile, our fares and daily parking rates have remained the same for well over a decade. We want to remind air travelers that in a time of rising prices, their best option is let MARTA do the driving to the Airport.”

The transit agency says their $5 round-trip rates and low daily parking fees can save residents a significant amount of money compared to rideshare options and airport parking.

MARTA charges $5 a day for parking at their Dunwoody, Medical Center, Kensington, Lenox and Sandy Springs stations, and $8 a day at their North Springs, Doraville, Lindbergh Center and College Park stations.

“For example, a traveler heading out of town for a 7-day trip could spend $5 to ride MARTA to and from the Airport, or as little as $40 to park and ride, leaving them with more money in their pocket and one less thing to worry about during their trip,” noted MARTA in the release.

The Airport MARTA station was temporarily closed for six weeks last spring for a renovation project that cost $55 million and served as part of MARTA’s $1 billion multi-year Station Rehabilitation Program. Changes included installing new platform pavers and new terrazzo flooring in the concourse, and preparing, sealing and painting the track and concourse walls.
