On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Poetry,” Atlanta’s most prolific wordsmiths discuss the art of evoking emotions with words. This “Speaking of Poetry” edition features poet and Spelman College English professor Sarah RudeWalker

“My poetry is focused on lyric expression. It’s an internal examination of the experiences of the Self. Sometimes that’s myself; sometimes it’s selves I have imagined, with encounters of power and equity and unfairness in the outside world,” RudeWalker said.

“Sometimes my poetry is formal, in kind of known form, and sometimes it takes its own form that the poem has called for.”

RudeWalker started writing poetry in grade school, encouraged by teachers and has been writing poetry ever since.

Now, as an English assistant professor at Spelman College, she helps the next generation of writers find their voices through poetry.
