The city of Smyrna is adding some new rules for property owners who want to lease out parking spaces. The city wants to ward off potential problems with parking near the new Braves stadium.

Business owners who want to rent out their land for Braves parking will have to register with the city, pave and stripe the property, and hire attendants to manage the parking lots.

But that doesn’t mean you can rent out your front yard.

Ken Suddreth is Smyrna’s director of community development. He says the City Council amended the city code to allow this special parking but only for commercial properties.

“We’re not going to burden the neighborhood with having to deal with Braves traffic because one of their neighbors wants to, you know, lease out parking and put them in their front yard,” he said.

Suddreth says property owners along Spring Road and Cumberland Parkway have already expressed interest in providing overflow parking for SunTrust Park.

The new stadium is set to open in the spring.
