Veteran sports broadcaster Fred Kalil can still remember going on air for the first time.

He says, at the time, he didn’t know how to edit or put in graphics— but somehow took on the opportunity and managed to fill an 8-minute sports broadcast.

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Kalil talked with show host Rose Scott about several key highlights of his career, including covering the 1996 Summer Olympics , surviving a brain tumor, and his love for sports and Atlanta.

During the conversation, Kalil also talked about retiring after 44 years in the business of telling sports stories.
