Students can score in one of three categories on the CRCT: “meets standards,” “exceeds” them, or “does not meet.” State Schools Superintendent John Barge said there are several ways to look at the data. For example, Barge said, comparing one group of students to itself can show you whether that group is progressing.

“I’m looking at math,” he said. “[This year,] you have 82 percent of fourth graders who met or exceed the standards. Last year, as third-graders, that number was 78 percent.”

Barge said comparing year-over-year scores, such as this year’s eighth graders to last year’s eighth graders, shows how well different groups of students master the same content.

This year’s eighth graders saw a higher percentage of students exceeding standards. Scores in some grade levels were flat. Others, such as grades 4, 5, and 7 saw slight dips in math scores.

Students who didn’t meet standards can retake the test this summer. However, that will be the last time the CRCT is administered. Next year, students will take the new Georgia Milestones testing series in grades 3-12.
