Award‑winning investigative journalist Nicole Carr — now a professor at Morehouse College — says she never intended to write a book. The former television news reporter also admits she “left the pages angry,” noting that it’s unsettling to draw such a clear through line between centuries‑old discrimination and the systemic racism that still shapes the medical field today.
That book, “The Price of Exclusion: The Pursuit of Healthcare in a Segregated Nation,” traces the history of Black physicians in America, the racism they endured, and how those barriers continue to influence today’s shortage of Black medical providers and the resulting health inequities.
Carr told “Closer Look“ host Rose Scott that her research not only documents the structural forces that shaped Black medical careers but also uncovers her own family’s story.
