A coalition of midwives is suing Georgia to challenge the state’s laws governing midwifery, alleging they impede midwives’ ability to treat patients and make a living.

The lawsuit, which also alleges the restrictions exacerbate Georgia’s gaps in access to maternity care, was filed in Fulton County Superior Court on April 2.

The state has some of the most restrictive midwifery laws in the nation, according to the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
