There’s an effort underway to memorialize the mostly Black men who died while forced to work on “chain gangs” in Northwest Atlanta during the Jim Crow era.
Bellwood Quarry is now home to one of Atlanta’s premiere greenspaces. And the National Center for Civil and Human Rights wants to ensure the city’s memorial has a lasting impact. To do it, they’re actively seeking the community’s ideas, says Darrin Sims.
He’s the director of the Center’s Truth and Transformation Initiative, which aims to promote honest, community engagement with difficult parts of history.
