Atlanta multi-instrumentalist Dashill Smith's music embodies the DNA of the black American experience
On City Lights’ series “Speaking of Music,” local musicians share work and stories in their own voices. In today’s segment, we feature Atlanta multi-instrumental musician Dashill Smith. “My music is pretty much a homogenous blend of soul, funk, jazz, intergalactic sounds… some avant-guard, some experimental, rock. Pretty much the DNA of the black experience here in America,” Smith says. “Did I mention hip-hop? Yes. Definitely hip-hop.”
Smith got started in music at about eight years old when he showed a strong interest in it. His family loved music and encouraged his pursuits. He even was given a baby grand piano by a supportive adult in his life, and he then learned how to play by ear.
As a professional musician, Smith loves what the city of Atlanta has to offer.
“I love Atlanta because there is always room for anyone to find their niche here, and it’s a solid community that’s full of love, grove, and hope. Atlanta is pretty much a pioneering hub,” Smith says.
